Chapter 9

I let my door creak close behind us before I gasped for breath to start moaning, but Jack jumped in before I could, changing my thought process.

“So, you’re going to a dance with George then?” he said shyly, throwing me completely off. Why did he care? One second he acts like I’m nothing then the next moment he is being weird and jealous?

“Are you jealous?” I laughed, and I could swear his cheeks flashed red as his eyes opened wide. He was clearly thinking of something to say, as all that came out of his mouth was some strange noise.

“Trixie don’t,” he eventually said with his brow creasing. I could feel my anger levels start to rise again. “I just wanted to know if you were going and if I need to look out for you?” I took a deep breath. I really couldn’t be getting into if Jack was jealous or not – what was the point? We stood in the dark of my room, the only light radiating off him. I didn’t know what to say but I didn’t want him to leave.

“Well, I will be going then? Unless…” He paused; maybe to read my face. He could probably see the panic I could feel at the thought of him going. “We could watch this?” He picked up Silence of the Lambs.

“OK, I would like that.” I grinned. I was so happy he wanted to spend some time with me again; maybe this stint of being strangers was going to end.

We sat at the top of my bed, both propped up by a pillow that lined the wall. Jack sat up perfectly straight, his feet resting against mine so I could feel the cold radiate off them, sucking the heat from mine.

“Your feet are so cold,” I said, pushing mine against his. “Are mine warm?”

“I can’t feel the heat, remember.” He looked at me, confused.

“I knew that,” I said, looking at him. When he is like this, relaxed, he just seems so alive it’s easy to forget. “I just forget, sometimes.”

“How can you forget that the pasty boy in the same clothes, who slightly glows and never changes is not a ghost.” He laughed at me, his smile giving me more shivers than his cold aura.

“Shhh, I suppose I’m so used to you ghosts it’s easy to forget,” I said, letting my head fall onto his shoulder, yet again forgetting. His shoulder stiffened underneath my cheek, lifting my head slightly for seconds until he took a deep breath and exhaled back into his previous position.

I watched the TV, watching Clarice walk to meet Hannibal in his dank cage; with every step of hers I felt my eyes get heavier and heavier until I could feel myself floating.

I got pulled towards that familiar voice of my past. I floated peacefully towards it, wanting to see the face it belonged to. As the white light dispersed around me and the view of my Grandma became visible, I rushed quickly stretching out my arms to embrace her.
